“Calypso @ Dirty Jim’s”, curato dai francesi Jean-Michel Gibert e Thierry Planelle, i quali hanno riunito gli ultimi grandi “calypsoniens” (il calypso è la musica tradizionale di Trinidad) per riscoprire questo genere musicale quasi dimenticato, incidere un disco e realizzare un documentario. I musicisti, tutti di età compresa tra i 56 e 86 anni, si sono riuniti in uno studio nella capitale dell’isola e, in compagnia della leggendaria orchestra di Syl Dopson, hanno ricreato la magica atmosfera che si respirava negli anni Cinquanta all’interno dello storico locale Dirty Jim’s Swizzle Club. Il a aujourd’hui disparu, mais ce disque permet de retrouver les grandes vedettes du genre qui s’y produisirent. Calypso Rose, The Mighty Sparrow, The Mighty Terror, Bomber, Lord Superior, Relator chantent les titres mentionnés ci-dessus et d’autres aussi légers et charmants. Ils sont accompagnés de l’orchestre de Syl Dopson, formation qui perpétue un style calypso très proche de celui que l’on jouait naguère dans les bars et lors des carnavals. À l’écoute de ce disque chaleureux et élégamment réalisé, on songe évidemment à l’un de ses fameux prédécesseurs, celui qui, sous le titre de « Buena Vista Social Club » redonna une large audience au son cubain. - Michel Doussot - Routard.com

CALYPSO music has been identified as the newest trend of world music to hit France and then, maybe, the rest of Europe. This is the bold prediction being made by Virgin Music, one of the top music industry groups in France. In fact, top calypsonians like Sparrow, Rose, Terror and Bomber are already getting ready to hit the stages in France and make a name for themselves and for TnT. I dischi di calypso hanno dentro il sole! Non so come facciano, ma riescono a imprigionarlo tra i solchi. Ed è una dolce prigionia. Il sole suona nei quatro, nei chac chac, nelle trombe mordibi, nei sax felpati, nelle congas e nelle chitarre. Il sole soprattutto brilla sulle voci di uomini e donne coinvolti in questa iniziativa che, nemmeno a dirlo, poteva venire in mente solo a un francese. Ebbene sì, è un progetto simile a Buenavista Social Club, ma questa volta trasferito a Trinidad e senza ibridazioni con musicisti provenienti da altrove. Solo vecchi "re e regine" del calypso come Calypso Rose o Mighty Sparrow, oppure Relator o Lord Superior. èer tacere di Bomber o Mighty Terror. A loro spetta rivitalizzare, spolverare, risciacquare e mettere a sciorinare al sole (ecco che ci risiamo!) brani degli anni '50/60, di cui l'unico celebre da noi è "Matilda" che era stato un hit di Harry Belafonte. Il Dirty Jim è un locale mitico di Port of Spain, Trinidad in cui si suonava questa musica. Il risultato è spiazzante, ma per nulla nostalgico. Il disco è bello non per quello che ha rappresentato, ma per quello che rappresenta ora. Sarebbe di monito a tutti gli innamorati nostrani della Campari Mixx Music! Questa è musica vera, questi sono i tropici e qui si salta (o si è tristi). Disco per l'estate! (e dvd allegato)
